Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities

Meet the CSLC

The Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities was formed in 2018, as a collaboration between CU-Boulder faculty, students from several departments and programs, and a committed group of Boulder citizens and agency staff. The Center provides foundational knowledge and a forum for productive discourse toward the planning and management of public lands in and around urban areas as integral components of sustainable and resilient communities in Colorado. The Center, based in CU Boulder’s Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Community (SEEC), is initially focused on public lands in the Boulder region, including Boulder city and county open space systems and adjacent federal lands, and their surrounding communities as local laboratories that exemplify the larger challenge of sustaining public lands in urban contexts.

Our approach

The Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities was created to conduct research and facilitate dialogue on the planning and management of public lands in Boulder and its surrounding areas. We have four main goals in our work:

Engage the community

ENGAGE THE
COMMUNITY

To engage all members of the community in active discourse, to better understand our relationships and needs with public lands.

Build knowledge

BUILD
KNOWLEDGE

To investigate and analyze the relationship between public lands and community health and well-being.

Foster stewardship

FOSTER
STEWARDSHIP

To foster stewardship of public lands and their values and functions.

Inform action

INFORM
ACTION

To improve decision-making around the management of public lands for desirable and sustainable outcomes.

Our Partners

Our partners are projects and organizations that share our vision for sustainable communities. Partners are hosted by the CSLC, promoted on our website and social media, and check-in with the center regularly about programs of interest. They administer and manage their own funds but often seek our advice and assistance on programming.

Join the CSLC!

We offer a variety of relationship opportunities to projects and organizations that share our vision, including Host, Partner, Sponsor, and Ally. Learn about each of the relationships here and reach out if one looks right for your project or organization!

Host

Host

When we host a project or an organization, we administer and manage their funds and promote them on social media and our website. Hosted projects engage regularly with our faculty director and advisors.

Individuals collaborating on hosted projects can recommend initiatives to the our director and advisors for their approval and allocation of resources. For example, the Community Collaboration on Forest Health.

Partner

Partner

When we partner with a project or an organization, they administer and manage their own funds. We do promote them on social media and our website. Partners engage regularly with our faculty director and advisors, and often seek their advice or assistance on programming.

Funds and priorities are determined by the partner’s own decision-making body. For example, the Boulder Apple Tree Project.

Sponsor

Sponsor

When we sponsor a project or organization, we offer our endorsement and involvement, with or without funds contributed. Sponsored projects set their own priorities and administer their own funds. We do promote them on social media and our website.

Sponsored projects update our faculty director and advisors on their progress. For example, the 2018 Colorado Pollinator Summit.

Ally

Ally

We become an ally of projects and organizations that share our fundamental interests and goals.

Our allies communicate regularly with our faculty director and advisors, and may formally collaborate with us on projects and initiatives related to sustainability.
